Colour is my inspiration and my obsession

While criss-crossing the country to attend art festivals where we show and sell our fibre art, I am transfixed by the passing scenery. Observing the layers of colour juxtaposed in the landscape has awoken in me a need to describe and interpret what I am seeing: earth under grasses; shadows under trees, hills and clouds; colours swimming beneath surface reflections; skies illuminated under clouds and sunsets; layers of particles reaching into the distance; the light and air between the viewer and the event. These “hidden” hues, juxtaposed, create a visual vibration.

The texture of pastel primer on paper, and the intense quality of pure pigment in a stick of soft pastel, allows for the interplay of colour to create an illusion. This is my challenge.

My background and professional artistic experience is in fibre arts. In 1986 I started a surface design business creating hand dyed silks: scarves, shawls, garments and wall hangings. I was later joined by my husband, Brian, and it has been our living since 1989.

In 2009 I discovered a passion for painting landscapes in pastel.

My love of drawing, colour, and travel, have informed my work.

I now feel ready and excited to share my pastel work with the public.
