About

A leaf, a feather, a seashell, a serpent, the texture of a tree. Organic forms emerge through the interpretation of the Japanese method of shibori resist dyeing. This surface design technique allows us to explore the relationship between colour and texture when creating a soft sculpture of wearable art, bringing a contemporary look to this ancient art form.

Louise Valentine and Brian Provencher are an award winning husband and wife team who have been collaborating since 1992. Louise is the designer and dyer while Brian does all of the shibori pleating and technical work. Their work has been shown in juried art shows and exhibitions in cities across Canada and the United States, winning numerous awards in fibre and wearable art categories.

Working with silk dyeing since 1981, Louise has always been strongly influenced by Japanese techniques; exploring hand painting, gum resists dyeing, roku-zome, devore etching, silk screening, vat dyeing, and shibori resist dyeing. The most recent works are a combination of hand painting and shibori.
